Arranged chronologically, the compilation gathers 70 choice selections from various record labels tracing the evolution of metal during its first golden age between 1968 and 1991. THE HEAVY METAL BOX presents more than five hours of blistering fury guaranteed to send devil horn salutes in the air.
The genre's progenitors get their due with the supreme heaviness of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and the hoodlum metal mania of Blue Cheer's cover of "Summertime Blues." "From that point on," renowned metal journalist Mick Wall writes in the boxed set's meticulous liner notes, "the floodgates were thrown wide open as a whole slew of next-generation rock bands, disenchanted by the empty promises of the so-called love generation, arrived like drunken, rabble-rousing gate-crashers at the party, intent on ripping up the rulebook, throwing love out the window - along with all the flowers - and replacing them with a distinctly unsettling ambience all their own. While America and Britain were metal's primary foundries, they were certainly not the only ones. Australia birthed the fast 'n' nasty Rose Tattoo while Germany proffered newly minted, power-first outfits like the Michael Schenker Group and Accept. From the deceptively sleepy Switzerland came the manic Krokus while Sweden yielded a genuine guitar god in the Ritchie Blackmore-obsessed Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Even Japan came up with their own version of the phenomenon in the aptly-named Loudness.
In the '80s, MTV helped bring the hair metal movement into homes across the nation making bands such as Dokken, Ratt, Hanoi Rocks, Skid Row, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Poison, Twisted Sister, and Quiet Riot famous hitmakers. "By the end of the '80s," Wall writes, "heavy metal had come full circle to the point where it was simultaneously riven by so many new categories and subgenres that you needed an encyclopedia to make sense of it all - and yet it was more universally popular than ever before."

Play and kill at the same time with the Gun guitar. Someone from Gizmodo saw this in a Japanese Yamaha store, where there must be lots of weird guitars, have a look at the bass in the left. The price is about $700, not bad if only you could shot with it.
3.– Pikasso
Pat Metheny is one of the most famous jazz guitar players and winner of lots of Grammys. The Pikasso guitar was built for him by luthier Linda Manzer in 1984 and it has 42 strings.
4.– Jeweled Jesus
A Fender Stratocaster carved by Doug Rowell for Mike Deasy in 1969, representing the figure of Jesus with a hand on the bridge. For more weirdness, it was stolen from him and returned 25 years later after announcing it on a webpage.
5.– Cigar box guitar
The guitar for people with few money. Many famous rock and blues players made one themselves when they were young and couldn’t buy one. Made from whatever you could find: cigar box, broom handle,… Carl Perkins, composer of “blue suede shoes” built one in his youth.
6.– Toilet seat guitar
This toilet seat guitar includes all the accessories for making it look very real, like the turd and the toilet paper. Makes me wonder, does it sound like sh*t?
7.– Harp Guitar
For some people (like me) it’s difficult enough to play the guitar, leave alone if it is combined with a harp. This is a combination of two instruments in one, and there are thousands of models, with different number of strings and configuration.
8.– Satan angel guitar
I have no additional info about this guitar, but the picture is weird enough to be included here. Recommended for death-metal and satanic bands, I suppose.
9.– Naked lady guitar
Wanna be really provocative? Then you have to play with this guitar or the next one, whichever fits you most. Both are guaranteed to scandalize your public and, of course, their mothers. Have a look where the jack is connected.

After weeks of on-again, off-again internet chatter, Led Zeppelin have confirmed they will reunite for a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, who died in 2006. The concert will take place on November 26 at the 02 Arena in London.
Joining Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones on the Zeppelin stage will be drummer Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham. It will be the first time Led Zeppelin founding members Page, Plant and Jones have performed together since May 1988, when they played at Atlantic Records’ 40th anniversary concert, also with Jason Bonham on drums.
Profits from the show will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which provides students with annual scholarships to universities in the U.K., USA and Turkey. In addition, a music scholarship open to all will be established at Ravensbourne College in the U.K.
In addition, Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini, all touched by Ertegun's guiding hand over the years, will perform at the concert.
Due to the anticipated overwhelming demand for this concert, tickets will be available by ballot only. Fans should register their names at www.ahmettribute.com. Names will then be chosen at random.
